Meet Mary Cullen McKeown

I had the joy and privilege of sitting in conversation with Mary over two days in February 2026 at her apartment in St. Paul, Minnesota.

You would never guess Mary was 94 years old. Her memory is sharp, her vitality vibrant, her joy for life present and palpable. She was recovering from a hip injury - the only thing slowing her down - but she was adamant, she would recover her agility and rejoin the world. This determination, this resilience, runs like a golden thread through all of Mary’s stories. I suspect it’s been passed down to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as well.

I came to our conversation well equipped. Several of her family members shared questions they were curious about. A gift that meant the world to Mary. She and I had an hour-long pre-conversation to establish trust and understand what would be most meaningful to preserve. While nervous about being recorded, she was clearly energized to share her stories and her faith, knowing they would be held for future generations.
 

The truth is that family and faith are everything to Mary. It’s that simple.

You’ll hear in these recordings that through good times and bad, this is what sustained her. And Mary has endured painful moments throughout her life including the early loss of her father, then the loss of two husbands. These three men, lost during three very different chapters, were defining losses. But they were not the last word.

Witnessing how grief diminished her own mother, Mary found her agency and made different choices. She chose faith. She chose forward motion. She chose life.

Hers is a story of the power of spiritual and familial love. That is a remarkable legacy.

Interviews like this are my favorite kind of exchange. It’s rare these days to witness someone’s truth and humanity in such an intimate way. Mary is expanded by pausing to appreciate her life journey. And I am expanded by knowing her deeply in return.
